Vietnam has been granted provisional membership of the speed skating branch of the International Skating Union (ISU).

The ISU Council approved the application of the Skating Federation of Vietnam at its latest meeting.

The national governing body is already a provisional member of the ISU for figure skating.

Members of the ISU Council also decided it would stage the governing body’s figure skating awards virtually “in order to honour the nominated skaters and award winners”.

The awards had been scheduled to take place during the World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Council is also set to stage next season’s awards remotely in response to the coronavirus crisis.

“The Council furthermore agreed to pursue this initiative with a season 2020/21 edition,” the ISU said in a statement.

A figure skating COVID-19 working group has been created to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on major events in the sport and the ISU’s finances.
