The Vietnamese Government is pulling funds out of its Southeast Asian Games and Para Games budgets, using the resources to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hanoi is scheduled to host the 2021 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) from November 21 to December 2, 2021, with the sister ASEAN Para Games scheduled for December 14-21.
The budget to organise the events has been cut by almost 50 per cent to VNĐ1tn ($42.5m/€39.3m) – about VNĐ900bn less than the original budget.
The budget to upgrade facilities at the My Dinh National Stadium has also been cut, from VNĐ805bn to VNĐ600bn. The stadium is set to be repaired at the end of October to prepare for the SEA Games. Since 2012, no national or international athletics tournaments have been there due to a damaged track. It is intended to be the main venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, and athletics and football competitions.
